It’s fucking Friday and I want to bitch about bitches who go to shows just to bitch about them. Why do you people do this to yourselves? Why do you pregame and then make the trip out to the show just to fucking sit there and be miserable the whole time? You are the worst thing about hipster culture and the worst thing about the world all rolled into one because you have the money and privilege required to spend your weekends going to shows and listening to good music, but you still sit there like you’re too fucking good for all of it.

Seriously, do us all a favor and just stop showing up. I remember seeing one such bitch come to a show that some of Syracuse’s better bands were putting on at Spark. He pulled up a chair to the front row and sat there with his arms crossed the whole time, scoffing at the people who were there to enjoy themselves. Could you get any more pretentious and awful than that? If someone wants to dance and let go at a show then let them! That’s what music is for! It’s there to help you be yourself, and to help you express a part of yourself that isn’t accepted in the typical constraints of society. If you don’t like the music, then that’s fair enough, but you shouldn’t be occupying the front row space just turn your nose up at the bands who have worked hard to put out music that they care about.

Not only are you doing a disservice to the band, but you’re also disrespecting the crowd with your uppity attitude. I feel like this is one of the major sticking points that separates the university crowd from the Syracuse locals because those who are lucky enough to reside on “the hill” are also more likely to adopt a snobby attitude towards the gritty parts of the town’s music scene. I’ll admit not all of the bands here are good. They definitely are not. Some of them can’t even play their instruments and use distortion pedals to mask their lack of talent. But at least they are trying to get better by playing as much as possible. We’re a small town and it’s our job to nurture the talent that we have here, because what other choice do we really have?

The music scene here gives us all a place to come together and enjoy something that the outside world doesn’t understand, and doesn’t want to. It gives us a means to express our ideas and creativity in a way that we can all relate to on some level. So when you go to a show just to be a hipster bitch, you’re also rejecting everything that this “scene” has given you. It has given you a place to truly be yourself, whatever that means. It might not always be perfect, and it’s definitely not clean, but at least it’s here. If you don’t care about the music and you don’t care about the people trying to make that music then do us all a favor and just fucking leave.

Keep an eye out for Jessica’s column every fucking Friday.

P.S. just for the sake of conversation/thought – using distortion pedals in a subversive way i.e. playing chaotically and using them to create different kinds of noise is a different and new kind of use for a relatively new technology which is pretty cool. It’s not how they were meant to be used but that’s the point. Food for thought. 😉
