20 Watts’ editor in chief takes aim at people who dislike artists for no good reason.

It starts like this:

“Ugh I HATE Taylor Swift!”

“Why don’t you like Taylor Swift?”

“She’s just too nice and pretty and… I don’t know. I just hate her.”

Or

“OMG I HATE JUSTIN BIEBER SO MUCH!”

“Why don’t you like Justin Bieber?”

“I don’t know. He’s like… a pussy. All the little girls love him.”

Here’s the thing. Can you please just stop yourself before you start talking about how you hate pop culture icons for no good reason? It’s fucking Friday, and I’m fucking tired of hearing people complain about how they hate Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

Let’s just talk about the Biebs for one second. Besides the fact he is the number one most followed person on Twitter, Justin Bieber is excessively talented. His new album, Believe Acoustic, is going to be an immediate hit. His voice is like butter being spread on a freshly baked hot cross bun. If you don’t believe me, watch the video below. Boy can sing. He can also play multiple instruments, and his fame came about at such a young age that it’s hard to argue against his natural talent. Not to mention he dated Selena Gomez, who is slammin’ and I’m not gay but I’m not saying I wouldn’t tap that, either. And did you know that Phish and Justin Bieber are bros, and Bieber loves Phish? They play Phish songs at Bieber concerts.

And now for Tay. Taylor Swift writes and sings pop gold. I don’t care if you like her music or not, it’s catchy and it will get stuck in your head. Grown men sing “Never Ever Getting Back Together.” I first heard that song when famous pop writer and Berkeley Music School grad Claude Kelly tweeted about how great it is. I remember waiting for it to come on Spotify even though I’m not even a Taylor Swift fan. So keep ranting, Kanye West, making a fool out of yourself in front of the entire crowd while Taylor Swift keeps collecting her awards, because we all know talent when we see it. We can hear it. I know you can hear it, too. You’re trying to be rebellious. Just stop. Do yourself a favor because you sound shallow and weak, and it’s unbecoming when you don’t know how to form your own opinions.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions, and I’m not saying you can’t have one. As long as those opinions are your own, which I find hard to believe. Before you express your opinions about Taylor and Justin because everyone else loves them, you should stop and think about why you actually hate them. Then ask yourself if that is even a decent reason to not like them. My guess is it’s probably not. It’s probably your own insecurities coming through in a form of begging for attention from like-minded peers who you think are going to affirm your beliefs. Well, we’re sick of your bitching. Make an opinion for a good reason. Here’s an example:

“I hate Ke$ha. I really don’t like her. I don’t think she sings, I think she talks over the track. Her music encourages young boys and girls to go out and get drunk and get sleezy and be sloppy and brush their little white teeth with whiskey. She looks sloppy all the time. I know someone who worked with her on tour and said she would walk around rehearsals with her vagina hanging out. EW. She’s just tacky, and she’s not rebellious. She’s a poser who doesn’t deserve to be revered for her talent because she has none. She is horrible live. Listen to any Ke$ha song and ask yourself what key she’s singing in. Wait, she’s not singing, she’s talking. Even I can sing better than that.”

OH MY GOSH this has been killing me! I can’t figure out the Bieber haters, it just doesn’t make sense. The thing that really gets me is when people try to predict his “downfall” or say he’s a one hit wonder. That really gets me, people need to learn what one hit wonder means. OHW =/= Justin.
