Songs about a love that’s ‘Sweeter than Fiction’ Kelsey Burke October 25, 2013 Blogs BY KELSEY BURKE Sometimes when you sit down and tell yourself it’s time to do something, the universe just drops everything into your lap. At a loss for what to write about, I turned to Taylor Swift’s new song “Sweeter than Fiction.” Though Swift has created yet another ballad sweet enough to make anyone need to brush their teeth, I could not get into writing an entire article about it, so I shut my browser and put my iTunes on shuffle. As I did this, I heard someone in the library say something I have always thought: “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie is one of the greatest love songs of all time. Guess which song played? I hope you guessed “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” because that’s the right answer! Fate’s push made me start to think of great love songs. Fabulous love songs don’t have to fit a certain bill, they just need to be from the heart (and they need to be amazingly written and executed well, of course.) Some love songs that I personally adore are “Something” by the Beatles, “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley, “Then” by Brad Paisley, “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith, “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls, “You Make Me Feel So Young” by Frank Sinatra (rivaled closely with “I’ve Got the World on a String”), “A Daydream Away” by All Time Low, “She’s Got Balls” by AC/DC, “I Want Crazy” by Hunter Hayes, “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” by Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons, “Silly Love Songs” by Wings, and, as I said before, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark”. A few of these choices may seem odd, like “She’s Got Balls.” But it’s legitimate—AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott wrote it for his then-wife when she said he didn’t write her enough love songs. A good love song puts something on the line for its subject or is so emotional that it shows through the voice of the singer. “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” is amazing to me because it places love in words that we always claim it should be: unconditional and undying, a caring on every level for another person… fearlessness in the unknown or “dark.” “I Want Crazy” is a song that inspires all of us to settle down for nothing less than the right person and be as crazy as all the songs, stories, and movies say love is. “Then” talks about how this true love is always growing. So for those lucky enough to have someone they hold dear, here’s a bunch of great material to get your significant other to give you a hug and a kiss. For those still searching, here’s something to look forward to.
