It’s hard to believe that the year is approaching its end in a few short months. That being said, there has been an overwhelming number of talented artists that have broken out into the scene and gotten their names heard this year. Yes, some of you #hipstas might have known these artists from their beginnings a few years ago, but for those of you who don’t know these special 5 at all, well, it’s time to shape up. Don’t sweat it, 20 Watts is here to guide you and pull you out from that rock you’re under to give you a more hip music taste. While it was hard to choose which to feature, it was ultimately decided that these 5 are most notable for 2014, in no particular order:

ODESZA

Odesza-neumos

Other artists you might enjoy: Flume, Gold Panda

Why notable: ODESZA’s sophomore album released this August, In Return, has been critically acclaimed (positive reviews including Nest HQ, Ear Milk, Renowned for Sound, etc.), which has only been further supported by their rise in Hype Machine and Spotify charts, as well as a nearly sold out promotional tour. The duo has carved their space in the crowded world of electronic artists, proving themselves as top-notch producers who bring their A-game for every song and every remix. In Return is warm and unique and brings all them good feels.

Chet Faker

Other artists you might enjoy: James Blake, Glass Animals

Why notable: Well, this is someone who you technically should have known by last year, but we’ll let you get away with it for this year. While you might recognize Chet for his EP with Flume, Lockjaw EP (2013), the Australian electronica-soul artist also released his debut album, Built on Glass the same year, receiving generally positive reviews and reaching #1 on the Australian ARIA Charts. His timeless vocals are smooth and sensual. Each song is simple but colorful, full of different textures and moods. Chet Faker is without a doubt a go-to, rainy day artist.

Zella Day

Other artists you might enjoy: Ellie Goulding, MisterWives

Why notable: Catchy melodies, sweet vocals, and a perfect blend of alternative and pop, of girl power and badass vibes. There is truly no reason to not love Zella Day. Earning herself more than 20,000 Facebook likes after a mere two year presence, Zella Day is everywhere: iTunes Single of the Week, a CMJ Showcase, the release of her new EP this month, and a lengthy list of remixes for her song “East of Eden” on SoundCloud (StéLouse’s remix being my personal favorite.)

Ryn Weaver

7kiRc47D

Other artists you might enjoy: Charli XCX, Noosa

Why notable: The full story of Ryn Weaver is still in the works. Uploading her hit “OctaHate” onto SoundCloud, the mysterious artist blew up after receiving some pat-on-the-back tweets from other artists who applauded the bouncy, fun song. With producing help from Charli XCX, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos, Cashmere Cat, and Benny Blanco, Ryn Weaver has only been climbing upwards from there. Her Promises EP was released a couple months following the frenzy, creating for herself a steady social media following and the continuing question of who is this said-Ryn Weaver? Move over Katy, the pop scene might have itself some serious competition.

Sir Sly

sir-sly-eliot-lee-hazel-2014-billboard-650

Other artists you might enjoy: Bad Suns, Magic Man

Why notable: Originally working anonymously, the indie pop band released their debut single “Gold” last year, which caught fire through its association with the trailer for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and various remixes of the song. Finally, their debut album You Haunt Me was released this September. The album portrays a mood of irresistible, dark eeriness (their coined genre is “sly-fi,”) while still maintaining a catchy, crowd-pleasing sound. Sir Sly’s momentum is only beginning; we can only expect to hear more from them next year. [soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/160276888″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
