Who Run the World?: How Dua Lipa is on her way to International Stardom Lucinda Garcia October 24, 2016 Blogs, Reviewsphoto via artist's Facebook Dua Lipa is a twenty-two-year-old Albanian pop star. She was born in London but moved to Kosovo with her parents at age 11. Five years later, Lipa convinced her family to let her move back to London so that she could begin her music career. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, was also once a musician. Thanks to some of her past experiences and her own hard work, Lipa was able to establish the necessary means to record music fairly quickly. Right now, Lipa’s largest fan base is set in Europe. She has performed in countries such as France, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and others. As for the United States, Lipa plans on opening for Australian YouTuber/singer Troye Sivan throughout the month of November at various American venues. On Feb. 10, Lipa will release her self-titled, debut album. Although she hasn’t released a full album yet, she has released several singles that have marked her as an artist to watch. Lipa’s first single came out slightly over a year ago. “New Love” was posted on her YouTube channel along with a low budget music video that has reached almost 3.5 million views. The song is a great showcasing of Lipa’s beautifully deep, rich voice. While I wouldn’t say it’s a dance track, it’s definitely a great sing-a-long song and the lyrics themselves are very empowering, as she sings about moving on from a past relationship. Lipa has another single called “Be The One” that was very popular online, although it is the one song that she did not write herself. Lipa’s two most recent songs show that she has the potential to rise in popularity here in the States. They both compliment her voice wonderfully but can also be dance along to. Their beats are contagious and her lyrics continue to promote confidence and female empowerment. “Hotter than Hell” was released in May and has reached close to 19 million views on YouTube. The music video’s quality is clearly heightened compared to her “New Love” video and is directed by Emil Nava, who has directed music videos for hits such as “This is What You Came For” by Calvin Harris (featuring Rihanna) and “Kill Em With Kindness” by Selena Gomez. Lipa’s most recent release, “Blow Your Mind (Mwah),” is another dance hit that encapsulates the style of pop music that Americans love, while featuring a real talent on vocals. Lipa’s voice is incomparable to other women pop stars and—as evidenced by her videos and music overall—she draws inspiration from the idea of powerful women. The music video for “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” features several other women dancing and having fun with Lipa and is directed by Kinga Burza, a female director that has worked with artists like Lana Del Rey, Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding and more. Armed with an amazing voice, great work-ethic and an overall passion for music, there is no question in my mind that Dua Lipa will soon become an international sensation.
